Anyone can look competent on a Tuesday in February. What separates HVAC companies in Phoenix is what happens when it is 112 degrees at midnight and the phone will not stop.

How the night shift became the whole company

Thermal started in 2009 with two vans and a landline that was diverted to a mobile phone overnight. The overnight diversion was supposed to be a temporary courtesy. Within two summers it was most of the business.

The reason is not complicated. In Phoenix, a failed air conditioner is not a comfort problem that can wait for business hours. Attic temperatures behind a dead system pass 150 degrees, the ceiling radiates that heat back down all evening, and the indoor temperature keeps climbing after sunset. For an infant, an elderly resident or anyone on medication that affects heat regulation, that is a medical situation and not an inconvenience.

So we built the company the other way round. Dispatch is staffed overnight rather than diverted. Parts stock is chosen for the four faults that cause most summer failures. The after-hours premium came out of the price list in 2019 because charging a premium for the normal case is charging people for the climate they live in.

Six standing rules

The things we will not do, written down

  • Technicians are not on commission

Nobody in this company earns more by selling you a bigger system. It is the single most important structural decision we have made, and it costs us revenue.

  • Flat rate, priced before the work

You agree the number in writing before a tool comes out of the van. A diagnosis that takes longer than expected is our problem.

  • The same rate at 3am

We removed the after-hours premium in 2019. In a climate where a night-time failure is the normal case, charging extra for it is charging for the weather.

  • We show you the readings

Microfarads, static pressure, superheat, delta T. Numbers, on paper, kept on file, so the next visit starts from evidence.

  • We will tell you not to buy

If the repair is the better arithmetic, we say so, even when a replacement is the larger invoice sitting on the table.

  • Directly employed, background checked

No subcontractors on residential work. The person on your driveway is on our payroll and answerable to the same board.

Runs the board and the technicians on it. Started as an apprentice on her father’s truck in Glendale and has been in Phoenix attics ever since.

Signs off every Manual J we produce. Will happily spend twenty minutes explaining why the tonnage you asked for is the wrong tonnage.

Built the triage script the night team uses. If you have called us after midnight in the last decade, you have probably spoken to Ruth.

Licensing, bonding and the number you should always check

We are licensed, bonded and insured with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors. Because this is a demonstration website, the licence number in our footer is ROC 000000, an obvious placeholder rather than a real registration. Inventing a plausible one risks colliding with an actual Arizona contractor.

On a live site you should be able to take the number straight to the ROC website and verify it in under a minute, and you should do exactly that with any contractor you are about to let onto your roof.

  • Verify the licence yourself

Any Arizona contractor should give you a ROC number you can type into the Registrar of Contractors website. If they hesitate, that is the answer.

  • Ask about the bond

A contractor bond is what a homeowner claims against if work goes wrong and the contractor will not put it right. Ask for the amount, not just the word.

  • Ask who is actually coming

Plenty of companies in this market subcontract residential work. Ask whether the technician is directly employed, and whether they are on commission.

  • Ask for the permit

A full equipment changeout needs a mechanical permit and an inspection. Unpermitted work becomes your problem at resale, not the contractor’s.

What the calls looked like

Every card carries the job, the neighbourhood and the minutes between the phone ringing and a truck on the driveway.

Called at 11:40pm on a 114 degree day with a newborn in the house. Truck was on the driveway inside forty minutes. Dead capacitor, replaced, cold air before 1am.

Three other companies quoted a 5 ton without measuring anything. Thermal ran a Manual J, came back with 4 ton, and my July bill dropped ninety dollars against last year.

  • Zone damper fault44 min

Upstairs had been hot for two summers and two contractors told me I needed a new system. It was a seized damper motor. Two hundred dollars and one afternoon.

They measured static pressure before and after and left me the printout. Back bedroom went from useless to actually cold. Nobody had ever measured anything at this house before.

Took two visits to find the leak, which they warned me about up front and did not charge me for the second trip. Honest about the fact that my system is on borrowed time.

The technician talked me out of the more expensive system I had already decided to buy. Explained why the extra SEER2 would not pay back at my runtime. Permit and inspection handled.
